An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is embedded in a device. Unlike the traditional physical SIM card that you insert into your phone via the SIM card slot, there is no need to do this with an eSIM.

The majority of modern smartphones and tablets come with eSIM already enabled including most iPhones and Android phones. You can see a list of eSIM supported devices here.
